The CEOS Recovery Observatory (RO) Demonstrator, launched in 2020, has significantly advanced disaster recovery efforts using Earth Observation (EO) data. Building on the RO Pilot's success after Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, the RO Demonstrator has provided crucial data for Post-Disaster Needs Assessments (PDNAs) and developed Global Rapid-post-disaster Damage Estimation (GRADE) approaches.
Key Milestones
- Activations: The RO Demonstrator was activated for six major disasters between 2020 and 2024, including floods in Armenia and Libya, and the Pakistan floods.
- Data Contributions: It produced detailed maps and analyses, integrating various data sources to support recovery efforts.
- Collaborations: Successful partnerships with organizations like UNDP, the EU, the World Bank, and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) have been instrumental in its achievements. LIST has contributed to enhancing the utility and effectiveness of gathered information through specialized mapping and advanced analytics.
Future Plans
The RO Demonstrator is transitioning to a pre-operational phase, aiming for a permanent RO by 2027. This phase focuses on mobilizing partners and ensuring continued data availability for effective disaster response.
