The recent WASDI Hackathon, held from February 13 to February 21, 2025, showcased the innovative potential of Earth Observation (EO) data and the WASDI platform. The event focused on developing groundbreaking applications to address real-world challenges.
Key Highlights
- Winning Team: The "Moving Window for Rainfall Cumulative Computation" (MWin4RainCC) team secured the top spot with their innovative application. Comprising members from Università degli Studi del Sannio-Benevento, University of Naples ‘Parthenope’, Università di Pavia, and the European Space Agency (ESA) Φ-lab, the team successfully developed and deployed an application on the WASDI platform to generate cumulative rainfall GeoTIFFs.
- Challenge Overview: Participants were tasked with creating an application that leverages IMERG data or other available datasets to compute cumulative rainfall using a moving time window. The application also enabled the computation of spatial averages over a shapefile of interest, demonstrating the versatility and power of the WASDI platform.
- Prize: The winning team was awarded free access to the WASDI platform for a full year, providing them with the resources to continue innovating and refining their application.
The hackathon highlighted the importance of such initiatives in driving technological advancements and addressing global challenges related to climate and environmental monitoring.
